Painting ‘en plein air’

Painting 'en plein air' by Jamie Kapitain

Painting ‘en plein air’ on Labour Day Weekend.

This weekend, I was able to paint two 2-hour study paintings en plein air between swimming, canoeing, playing guitar and visiting several local art galleries.

Painting outside is a very different experience compared to sitting at the easel in the controlled environment of the studio. In the landscape, the light is constantly shifting, the wind is blowing and there are surprises like the curious hummingbird that hovered over my shoulder. I also become aware of sounds, smells and visual details usually overlooked when tossing a football with family or canoeing.

This autumn, I plan to do more painting en plein air to sharpen my eye and hopefully, have some more surprises.
