New Painting: Autumn Field Near Ariss, Ontario

'Autumn Field Near Ariss, Ontario' (2012) by Jamie Kapitain.

‘Autumn Field Near Ariss, Ontario’ (2012) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas, 22×28 inches.

This painting is one of my newest works celebrating the geometry of the rural landscape. I like how the viewer is pulled into the landscape by the sweeping curve and continues to the distant horizon line in the upper right of the canvas. When depicting a field, the challenge is to decide how much variation to capture in a landscape that is easily described as a monoculture, a single plant species.

You can view the initial sketch here and the study painting here. If you want to see the painting in person, it is hanging at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in my ‘New Works’ show until the middle of June.

Rich details! Beautiful greens. I love the curve of the crop.
