'Guelph Lake, Winter' (2012) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas, 48x48 inches.

Here is another new painting currently hanging at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in my ‘New Works’ show. I was out on the ice of Guelph Lake to take photographs for this painting in the winter of 2008. That same year, I started the canvas and fought with capturing the snow-covered ice. I ended up putting the painting aside and returned to it with fresh eyes in 2012. It celebrates the changing states of the landscape, specifically when a lake becomes a ‘field’ in the winter. My show includes the forests, fields and lakes of Ontario so this painting, whether you consider it a lake or field landscape, is an important addition.

Wonderful contrast between the softness of the snow and the hard upward thrust of the grasses.

Thanks Mollie. I was also attracted to the contrast between the cool blues of the snow and hot reds of the grasses.
