New Painting: Diablo Canyon, New Mexico No.2

June 9, 2011

'Diablo Canyon, New Mexico No.2' (2011) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas, 14x11 inches.

This is the third painting born from a week spent in New Mexico and depicts the route out of beautiful Diablo Canyon. The view into the canyon was captured in the first painting Diablo Canyon, New Mexico.

I’ve added some process images for the creation of this painting. After sketching the image on the stretched canvas, I apply an undercoat to mute the stark white of the surface. Starting with dark colors, I slowly build the landscape first mapping out large masses and gradually focusing on finer and finer details.

When I went to New Mexico, I had no intention of painting the landscape because I am consumed with capturing the Ontario woodlands and lakes in my canvases. I planned to survey the art galleries in Santa Fe, hike the high desert and do some sketching. It’s a testament to the beauty of the desert landscape that I couldn’t help but create a series of paintings when I returned to my studio. If you ever have an opportunity to visit the Santa Fe area, take it.
