Art Gallery of Hamilton Art Sale

May 6, 2011

'Early Spring Near Guelph' (2010) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas, 30x40 inches.

This painting is in the annual Art Gallery of Hamilton Art Sale this weekend in the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Pavilion – a beautiful space for showing art. In this work, I was interested in capturing the distance seen through the leafless stand of poplar and birch. Just west of Guelph, I spotted the red dogwoods against the early spring fields and walked along railway tracks to take photographs. The spring color palette and the sun on the bark combine to show the beauty in the landscape at a time of year – just after the snow melt and before the trees leaf out – when you might not expect it. The sale runs until 5pm on Sunday.
