Study Painting: On The Carriage Trail, Mono Cliffs

February 16, 2011

'On The Carriage Trail, Mono Cliffs - Study' (2011) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas board, 8x10 inches.

The view from the Carriage Trail in Mono Cliffs Provincial Park is the reward after hiking through the dark woodland from the trail head. You can see many kilometers through the trees to distant agricultural land from high atop the Niagara Escarpment. The unique color palette created by sunlight hitting the coniferous and deciduous trees in the surrounding hills adds warmth to this winter study painting. There is an intriguing contrast between this warmth and the cool blues and grays in the shaded forest foreground.
