Study Painting: Autumn Near Salerno Lake

December 15, 2010

'Autumn Near Salerno Lake - Study' (2010) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas board, 8x10 inches.

It is literally impossible to be a Canadian landscape painter and not be aware of the Group of Seven. Their landscape paintings always create excitement in the auctions and are the subject of countless new books annually dealing with Canadian art and identity. Since I first saw their iconic paintings at the Art Gallery of Ontario as a young boy, I have appreciated the Group’s ability to capture the essence of the landscape using the boldest of colors. With this study painting of a small, nameless lake in the Haliburton Highlands, I am exploring the use of unabashed color (compared to my usual color palette) inspired by the works of Group members Lawren Harris and J. E. H. MacDonald as well as painter Tom Thompson, who influenced the Group.
