Study Painting: Winter Ravine, Near Collingwood

November 16, 2010

'Winter Ravine, Near Collingwood - Study' (2010) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas board, 8x10 inches.

When you stop and look, there is a lot more to see in a winter landscape than the obvious snow and leafless trees. In this ravine, I liked the little glimpses of a river under the snow and the hardy autumn foliage still hanging from the branches. The flat light left no shadows in the snow so these details became the focus. This ravine was behind a house we rented near Collingwood and Blue Mountain Ski Resort.

The colour palette in this study is stunning—exactly how it looks/feels on an overcast “anyday” in an Ontario forest in winter.

Thanks Sean. This atmospheric landscape was a joy to paint. I’m still deciding whether to create a large scale painting.
