I just returned from a week of sketching, hiking and gallery-hopping in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe is the second largest art center in the United States behind New York City and I visited most of the over 150 galleries and museums. There was some impressive art work to be sure but it was hiking and sketching the stunning high desert landscape of canyons, mesas and red rock that was most memorable. The light there seems to be clearer and the colors more vivid than anywhere else I’ve visited. The desert forms and patterns lend themselves nicely to quick sketching and the color palette – oranges, reds and purples – is a nice change from the Canadian Shield’s blues and greens. I’m back in the studio, inspired and full of new ideas to explore. Stay tuned for some exciting new work.

I can’t wait to see how you translate Kitchen Mesa Near Abiquiu into painted form. It will be an exciting diversion from your other pieces.
