Stop! Look at a Painting.

August 25, 2010

'Autumn Snow' (2006) by Jamie Kapitain. Oil on canvas, 24x24 inches.

A recent article in The New York Times, Digital Devices Deprive Brain of Needed Downtime, discusses the need for people to take a break from their digital devices:

…when people keep their brains busy with digital input, they are forfeiting downtime that could allow them to better learn and remember information, or come up with new ideas.

I suggest going to an art gallery or sitting on your couch if there’s a painting on the living room wall. Letting your eyes and thoughts wander through an image of the landscape is just the ‘downtime’ you may need. Oh, and don’t look at a painting on your new iPad or laptop computer, that’s cheating.
